The Wilkin County Farm Service Agency Relay for Life Team was first formed in 2006 when as a “Stride for Life” on the campus of the North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton it just seemed to be a journey they wanted to take. It held special meaning as PT, Kathy Steiner’s son David passed away suddenly of cancer while a student on that same campus in 1999. This fundraiser for the American Cancer Society held a special meaning for every member of the staff who had been touched by cancer in some way. Now in the 9th year of participation in the Relay for Life, the FSA team had a great year. They raised $11,497, the top team of the event. This was a combined effort of the Wilkin Staff – Carol Poppel, Kathy Steiner, Mary Norman, Karen Awender & Wayne Krump; West Otter Tail County PT, Sheila Saurer; NRCS staff – Yara Gonzalez, Marissa Moxness, & Jenny Tischer, plus friends and family. Wayne (Daisy Dike) Krump was crowned “Mr. Relay” raising $2100 in donations on his own. They plan to keep “Relaying” until there is a Cure…..hopefully soon.
